About Hope's Kitchen

Hope’s Kitchen was founded in 1999 by Rachel Higgins and Megan Lesczynski, members of Mary Immaculate Parish who were Freshman at Kirksville High School. They were inspired by learning about hunger issues while 8th Graders at Mary Immaculate School and by Rachel’s experience with a soup kitchen in Phoenix, where her family lived before moving to Kirksville. Other churches, organizations, businesses, and individuals in the community joined the effort and Hope’s Kitchen served its first meal in November, 1999, in the Mary Immaculate Cafeteria, where it continues to serve meals today.

The kitchen was open one Saturday a month in its early years and provided meals for around 50 people. Now, it is open two Saturdays a month from August through April and serves as many as 160 meals each time.

Hope’s Kitchen has been sponsored since by donations from the Kirksville community and run by an ATSU associated club.
